It’s rare to witness an NFL game conclude with a final score that has never occurred in league history, but that’s precisely what the Jets and 49ers delivered on Monday night in San Francisco.
In the final quarter of the 49ers' victory, the main suspense revolved around whether the game would result in a scorigami, which refers to a game ending with a unique final score.
With just 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the 49ers held a 32-13 lead, and if that had been the final tally, it wouldn’t have qualified as a scorigami. However, in a twist, Tyrod Taylor connected with Allen Lazard for a touchdown with only 25 seconds left, bringing the score to 32-19. The Jets then attempted a two-point conversion but failed, resulting in the remarkable occurrence of the game ending with an unprecedented score of 32-19.
As shown above, this marks the 1,085th unique final score in NFL history.
Had the Jets successfully converted their two-point attempt at the end of the game, the outcome would NOT have been a scorigami, as a 32-21 score has occurred multiple times in NFL history. This failed conversion was the Jets' second unsuccessful attempt at a two-point conversion during the game.
This incident marks the EIGHTH time the 49ers have achieved scorigami under Kyle Shanahan, though it hasn't happened recently. Prior to Monday, the last instance of scorigami for the 49ers was in September 2020 when they defeated the Giants 36-9.
For the Jets, this is only the second time since 2015 that they’ve been part of a scorigami, with the last occurrence in November 2021 during a 45-30 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Notably, this is the second consecutive year that a scorigami has occurred in Week 1. The 2023 season saw a total of nine scorigamis, but as each new score is recorded, the likelihood of achieving nine or more in the 2024 season may be slim.
