Two U.S. Navy pilots safely ejected over the Red Sea after their F/A-18 fighter was mistakenly shot down early Sunday in what military officials describe as "an apparent case of friendly fire."
One pilot sustained minor injuries, as reported by U.S. Central Command.
The incident occurred when the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, accidentally fired upon and hit the aircraft that was operating off the USS Harry S. Truman.
The military announced that a full investigation is underway.
For over a year, the U.S. Navy has been patrolling the region in response to ongoing attacks on commercial ships by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen, particularly following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.
Just hours prior, the military reported that U.S. forces carried out precision airstrikes targeting a missile storage facility and a command-and-control site used by the Houthis. They also shot down multiple uncrewed aerial vehicles and an anti-ship cruise missile during the operation, which involved both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy and included F/A-18 aircraft.
