Maggie Smith, the acclaimed Oscar-winning actress known for her work on stage and screen, has passed away at the age of 89.

Actress Dame Maggie Smith, renowned for her roles in the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, has passed away at the age of 89, her family has announced.

A titan of British theatre and film, she received two Academy Awards during her illustrious career: one for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and another for California Suite in 1979. In addition to these victories, she had four other Oscar nominations and was honored with eight BAFTA awards.

In a statement released by her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, they expressed their sorrow: "It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. A fiercely private individual, she was surrounded by friends and family at the end. She leaves behind two sons and five beloved grandchildren, who are heartbroken by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother."

The family also extended their gratitude to the staff of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness during her final days, and they requested privacy during this difficult time.

Dame Maggie’s career began in theater, and she earned her first BAFTA nomination for the 1958 melodrama Nowhere to Go. By 1963, she was cast as Desdemona in Laurence Olivier’s production of Othello at the National Theatre, a role that would be adapted into a film two years later, leading to her Oscar nomination.
