Lionel Messi was absent from Argentina's match against Peru: Explaining why the World Cup winner was rested during the Copa America clash

In Miami Gardens, Fla., Lionel Messi watched from the Argentine national team's bench as the reigning world champions concluded their Copa America group stage with another win.

Lautaro Martinez netted goals in the 47th and 86th minutes, propelling Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Peru at Hard Rock Stadium in their final Group A match, with Messi absent from the action.

"Of course, having Leo on our team is always our preference, but in his absence, we give our all," remarked Argentine assistant coach Walter Samuel, who stood in for the suspended head coach Lionel Scaloni. "Today, we've shown that we can perform even without him."

Argentina had already clinched a spot in the Copa America quarterfinals before the match. They now await the outcome of Sunday’s game between Mexico and Ecuador to determine the second-place finisher in Group B.

Next up for Argentina is a match on July 4th at NRG Stadium in Houston.

"We've secured three wins in the group stage, and now it's time to congratulate ourselves. Let's rest up and focus on what lies ahead," remarked Martinez, who contributed four of Argentina's five goals in group play.

Lionel Messi's injury updates are often closely followed. Do you follow football news regularly?

It sounds like Messi's recovery is progressing positively, although he didn't play in the recent match due to his ongoing groin/adductor injury. It's promising that he was seen walking normally and smiling, suggesting he might be close to returning to action. Argentina will likely continue to monitor his condition day by day before deciding on his availability for upcoming matches.

Martinez dazzles in Argentina's triumph.

Argentina took the lead early in the second half on Saturday night, with Martinez scoring just two minutes after halftime from an assist by Angel Di Maria. Martinez celebrated his goal by embracing Messi on the sidelines.

Martinez continued his stellar performance by scoring his second goal of the match in the 86th minute, a skillful chip shot over Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese after a stiff-arm move.

Despite the disappointment of not seeing Messi play in his new hometown, the sold-out crowd showed their support with loud cheers as Messi was featured on all four big screens inside the stadium.

If Argentina advances to the Copa America final, which is scheduled for July 14, it will once again be held at this stadium.

German Pezzella (6/10): Pezzella was solid defensively, although not as standout as Otamendi. He also had a chance that narrowly missed the target. Gonzalo Montiel (7/10): Montiel was actively involved in Argentina's attacking moves, often venturing forward similarly to Tagliafico. His cross led to Argentina winning a penalty in the 70th minute, highlighting his impactful performance for
