Portugal's EURO 2024 Journey Comes to an End

Portugal's Euro 2024 campaign comes to a close as France edges them out 5-3 on penalties.

After a tense 120 minutes in Hamburg, the match was decided by penalties. Joao Felix missed his attempt, while Theo Hernandez sealed the win with a composed strike. Bruno Fernandes, who scored against Slovenia, didn't participate in the shootout after being substituted. Diogo Dalot, known for his FA Cup semi-final goal, also didn't enter the game.

With this result, Spain will face France in the first semi-final on Tuesday. The remaining quarter-finals, England vs Switzerland and Turkey vs the Netherlands, are scheduled for Saturday.

Fernandes showed early promise, though his corners were less precise than usual. He had a shot deflected wide after 16 minutes. He was given a rare chance to take a free-kick, with Ronaldo stepping aside, but his attempt missed the target. His standout moments included winning possession and disrupting Griezmann's goal attempt. Despite playing mainly on the left, he followed Martinez's instructions, contributing across the pitch.
In the opening hour, Bruno had the best chance, his shot saved by Maignan's strong hand after a dart into the box. He also set up Joao Cancelo, whose shot went wide. The game suddenly opened up as Vitinha tested Maignan, while Muani and Camavinga missed chances for France. Dembele's lively drive narrowly missed, keeping the score goalless.

Fernandes was surprisingly substituted in the 75th minute, with no appearance from Dalot off the bench as the game went into extra time. Ronaldo missed a chance set up by Conceicao, and Leao had a shot blocked before the first period ended quietly. In extra time, Felix's header hit the side-netting, and Maignan saved Mendes's attempt.

The penalty shootout saw only one miss, from Felix, hitting the post, as Hernandez's successful kick sent France through.
