American singer Mariah Carey lost her mother and sister on the same day.

American singer Mariah Carey lost her mother and sister on the same day.

Her mother, named Patricia, and her sister, identified as Alison, passed away over the weekend, as the singer stated in a message.

“My heart is broken that I lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said on Monday, August 26.

“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

The Grammy-winning singer expressed that she felt blessed to have spent time with her mother in the week before her death and requested privacy during this difficult time.

She did not release further details about what caused the deaths of her mother and sister.

Patricia, who was 87 years old, was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent.

In her 2020 memoir, *The Meaning of Mariah Carey*, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer detailed her complicated relationship with her mother, explaining that it caused her "so much pain and confusion."

Carey, who is 55 years old, mentioned that competition created tension between them. She stated that professional jealousy "comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it’s particularly painful."

However, she also expressed the deep love she had for her mother. In the dedication of her book, she wrote: “To Pat, my mama, who, through it all, I believe did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always."

In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, the singer said she was "definitely" affected by her mother’s criticism while growing up. She acknowledged that she always credited her mother with introducing her to music.

Carey’s relationship with her older sister Alison, who is 63, was also complex. In her memoir, she mentioned that she wasn't on good terms with her mother and brother, Morgan, stating it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to not have any contact.”

Alison sued Carey for $1.2 million (£909,780) following the release of the memoir, claiming "immense emotional distress," labeling it as "vindictive."

Carey’s father, Alfred, passed away from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.

She is regarded as one of the most successful singers in the world. Her holiday single "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist of all time. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist with 19 songs and has sold over 220 million records worldwide. Additionally, she has served as a judge on the competition show *American Idol.*
