Commanders send former first-round wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Eagles.

Jahan Dotson's unusual preseason with the Commanders has led to a trade.

Dotson is moving from Washington to Philadelphia, as the Eagles announced a deal that includes the wide receiver and a fifth-round pick in exchange for a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks in the 2025 draft.

This trade marks the end of Dotson's tenure in Washington, where he was drafted 16th overall in 2022 but struggled to find success amid constant changes at quarterback. In his first two years, Dotson amassed 1,041 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns while playing alongside Carson Wentz, Taylor Heinicke, and Sam Howell. With the addition of 2024 No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels, Dotson seemed ready for a brighter future in Washington before the trade.

The arrival of a new management team led by general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn marked the end of Jahan Dotson's tenure in Washington. Once projected to be a No. 2 receiver alongside star Terry McLaurin, Dotson became an expendable asset over a single summer.

As the preseason progressed, the chances of a trade increased. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels received his usual snaps before exiting early, while Dotson found himself playing well into the second half of Washington’s first preseason game. Typically, established players see limited action unless trying to impress a new coaching staff. However, Dotson fell behind Dyami Brown on the depth chart, and after a more standard 23 snaps in Week 2, Washington opted to move on from the Penn State standout.

At 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds, Dotson was expected to take on a more prominent slot role in 2024 with Washington. In Philadelphia, he may fulfill a similar position, joining a talented receiving group featuring A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. To secure his place in the Eagles' offense before Week 1, Dotson will need to acclimate quickly. The Eagles are clearly pleased to acquire talent at a good price, particularly from a division rival, at this stage of the preseason.
